This book is a character study of a woman on the verge of a total mental and life breakdown. Imogene is the narrator and she tries to convince the reader, as well as herself, that she is in a love story. A story of a teacher having an affair with a student is definitely dark, and Sullivan really delves into the darkness and the hysteria that this affair causes Imogene. ![]() The content of this book will definitely turn some people away, but as I've written before in previous reviews, I like dark. The story follows this 'relationship' and its inevitable end. Before long, Imogene begins an affair with one of these boys. Imogene finds herself in the orbit of a generation of future leaders, boys from wealthy families who have never heard the word no before. Indecent by Corinne Sullivan is about Imogene Abney, a first-year teaching apprentice at a prestigious all-boys boarding school. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In general, Kurlansky is more adept at covering the political front than he is the equally revolutionary arts world, and it's apparent that any chapter in this book could be expanded into a book of its own. The author is more than willing to choose heroes (the doomed Robert Kennedy) and villains (victorious presidential candidate Richard Nixon), and clearly sides with the rebels in most cases. Kurlansky is skilled at concisely capturing the personalities behind the conflicts, whether they be heartbroken Czech leader Alexander Dubcek as Eastern Bloc troops violently suppress his nation's uprising or respected veteran newsman Walter Cronkite reluctantly editorializing against the war in Vietnam. Not so fortuitously, the Summer Olympics in Mexico City and a presidential election in the United States conspired to elevate the tensionhigher as months passed. With youth in ascendancy, music, film, and athletics became generational battlegrounds between opposition forces that couldn't be more appalled with one another. With the Vietnam War and Soviet repression providing sparkplugs in the East and West, student movements heated up in Berkeley, Prague, Mexico City, Paris, and dozens of other hotspots. Given its broad and vibrant subject, it would be quite difficult for a writer of any proficiency to pen a boring book on 1968, and Mark Kurlansky has indeed pulled together an entertaining and enlightening popular history with 1968: The Year That Rocked the World. ![]() ![]() It is a fascinating look back at the biggest decision in WJ history with two of the people who were front and center when it came to making the decision. Like King, he writes kids great, and also writes them great as adults. Well, I guess if Pyper can be accused of anything, it would be a wonderful portrayal of four young friends in a creepy setting, and a revisit of the town's Bad Thing in their adult years. I had only glazed over reviews, only because I wanted to avoid the chance of spoilers (generally negative reviews tend to be rife with them), but from what I can gather, some people have called this a knock off of Stephen King's IT or The Body. ![]() I am shocked at the average rating of this book. It almost got to the point where I was going to take it off my list altogether. Every time I was deciding what to read next, I would come to this and be cooled by the 3.52 rating. So I got on to Goodreads and added it to my to-read list. I had first heard of this book by reading a glowing review for it in a newspaper, perhaps The Globe and Mail. ![]() ![]() ![]() Will she find a way to repair what matters most to her?
